Social Justice & Equity Track – Social Venture Partners International Conference

October 20, 2016 - October 22, 2016

Dr. Hackman will be presenting the Social Justice & Equity track at the 2016 Social Venture Partners International annual conference. Attendance at this conference is open to Social Venture Partners organizations and members.

From the conference organizers:

As philanthropists, we have an important role to play in ensuring ALL people have the opportunity to succeed, but dismantling entrenched systems of inequity can feel insurmountable. After a powerful and popular two-day workshop at SVP’s Leadership Retreat, Dr. Heather Hackman is back to lead a series of sessions that will help you gain the skills and allies needed for that journey. Social Justice & Equity Track sessions include:

Developing a Social Justice and Equity Lens

An equity and social justice lens brings into focus the ways that systems of oppression shape different groups’ experiences with power, treatment and access to opportunity – and the resulting inequities. By actively seeking out new information about class, race and gender along with deliberately uprooting previously established misinformation, individuals and organizations can begin to put such a lens into place. This lens can help SVPs to sharpen their focus on outcomes, uncover patterns of inequity, and separate symptoms from causes so that resources can go to solving the root issues. In this session, Dr. Heather Hackman will introduce participants to the basic dynamics of systems of oppression and the steps to developing a social justice and equity lens.

Assessing the 4 P’s (Programs, Policies, Procedures and Practices) with a Social Justice and Equity Lens

Once you’ve developed a social justice and equity lens for your organization, you have the opportunity to examine the “four Ps” – your programs, policies, procedures and practices – to ensure that you’re not inadvertently propping up the systems of oppression that  you mean to help dismantle. In this session, Dr. Heather Hackman will walk you through the process and share stories of organizations that undertook changes that were initially scary, but ultimately increased their impact.

Office Hours

Over the course of the conference, Dr. Heather Hackman will be available to meet with SVP leaders to discuss their social justice and equity challenges and plans. You and your team can sign up for a 30-minute session at the conference registration desk.
