Conference Workshop: “Getting in the Boat: A White Journey Toward Racial Justice Leadership”

March 28, 2017 @ 8:30 am - 9:45 am

Dr. Hackman will be presenting a concurrent workshop at the 2017 ACPA Convention in partnership with staff members Jess Carter and Ally Schipma from Washington University.

Workshop description: Last year, Washington University in St. Louis’ Associate Director and Residential College/Community Director team identified a need for additional conversation about the impact that race, racism and Whiteness had on the team both personally and professionally. As a result, the department began a year-long dive into Racial Justice work. The purpose of this session is to share the experience that three White professionals who were a part of the implementation process had and what lessons were learned that can help guide other White professionals whose institutions are either interested in or planning to make the same shift in their own departments or programming. This topic is innovative in that Residential Life offices are tasked with creating trainings, student selection processes, and professional recruitment practices that are centered on our department’s vision and values- but how often are we critically reflecting on our practices through a racial justice lens? Further, how often are we able to critically analyze how our own White racial identity impacts our work as White people within the system of higher education, a system that was inherently founded in and upheld by Whiteness? This topic is important to our profession because the current climate in our nation is filled with hateful and harmful rhetoric around race, racism and Whiteness and we in Residential Life are uniquely positioned to help dismantle White supremacy if we arc the many resources, practices, policies, and programs within our purview toward racial equity. Our hope is that this session will provide a space for others to learn from our failures and successes on this journey, have a deeper understanding of Whiteness and how it manifests in our everyday student affairs work, and return to their institutions with ideas and programs that will place racial justice at the center of their work.
