Conference Workshop: “Chipping Away at the Edifice: Disrupting Racism at your Institution”

October 29, 2016 @ 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm

Dr. Stephen Nelson will be offering a workshop at this year’s Overcoming Racism Conference.

Session Description: It can be very difficult to establish social justice work and to disrupt racism in any institution. It has been especially difficult within healthcare. There is much resistance to this kind of work within healthcare systems and other institutions, especially those that are white-dominant. Likely the largest barrier is the lack of awareness that there is a problem. Physicians and other healthcare providers often like to believe that our healthcare system functions in a vacuum, outside of our highly racialized society. In this session I will describe my experiences and the types of resistance to establishing social justice work at my institution. We will discuss tools and interventions to help break down the barriers and to “disrupt racism as usual”. This will be a highly interactive session as we work together to develop a tool kit for breaking down institutional barriers to social justice work. I will use a brief didactic intervention along with video presentations and active audience participation to create a list of barriers and solutions. This session should particularly benefit those involved in the development of institutional policies and curricula.

From the Conference Organizers: This year’s conference theme is Disrupt Racism as Usual. Too many people feel powerless and need specific ideas and encouragement to act. Some might get paralyzed by fear, equating “disrupting” with “violence.”

This conference will empower participants to understand how they can disrupt racism in ways that makes sense in the context of their own lives. It will give people concrete ways to disrupt racism in our communities, our institutions and ourselves, along with the context of why we need to disrupt racism and inspiration for action.

Each day will include a full slate of workshops providing opportunities to reflect, connect and commit!
